Net Australian immigration down by 20 percent
by Guneet S - June 2, 2010
Australia, 2nd June: Australian immigration has witnessed a net decline of 20 percent over the period of last one year, the Australian immigration department has revealed.

Its being forecast that the levels of Australian immigration will go down further in the coming times. The recent changes in the Australian
immigration rules introduced by the Australian immigration department are being blamed as the probable reason for decline in the number of
immigrants coming to Australia.
The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) have made strict regulations for international students and general skilled
migrants seeking jobs in Australia. Apart from the stricter Australian visa norms for potential Australian immigration applicants, the present
financial scenario also seems to be bearing some impact on the drop in the migration rates to Australia.
As per the figures by Australian Bureau of Statistics, in March 2009, net overseas migration touched a highest level of 305,900. The peak was
due to significant increase n the number of temporary immigrants after the permanent entry gateway for international students was thrown open
by the Howard government.
The immigration figures are likely to fall nearly 20 percent by the end of this month, Australian immigration minister Chris Evans stated 26th May,
2010. He was speaking on the occasion of the launch of the publication of DIAC- “Population flows- Immigration aspects 2008-09.”
The immigration figures are expected to fall between 230,000 and 250,000 by the year ending 2009-10 since the nation has been issuing
temporary Australian visas only to those who were required to fill the skill-gaps in Australian labor market, the minister maintained.
Also, net overseas migration to Australia is falling down due to the recent reformations to the Australian 457 visa category to see that only those
overseas migrants are allowed into the country that are actually in high demand.
The figures for net overseas migration are arrived by taking into consideration permanent migrants in the nation along with those staying in the
nation for a period exceeding one year.
Senator Evans said that the recent announcement of the new SOL(Skilled Occupation List) by the Australian government is likely to deliver only
the best and highly skilled immigrants to Australia while closing the door for permanent residency through low-value study courses.
