Nearly half of US H1B visas gained by Indians, US admits some misuse

United States, 29th April: Indians seemed to be the biggest claimers of the US H-1B visas and US L1 visas this year, states a senior official of the US.

He has, however, admitted that there have been some incidents of misuse of the US work visas by Indians in the recent times.

Misuse of US H1B visas---According to Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Janice Jacobs, there has been, admittedly, certain misuse of the US H-1B visas and US L1 visas. Hence, the efforts are being made to make sure that such a happening does not repeat in the future, he asserted.

Strict measures won’t affect US-India bilateral relations--The strict measures for ensuring fair use of US H1B visas in the coming times will not have any effect on the bilateral relationship between the US and India, Jacobs assured.

In the past year, around 50 percent of US H-1B visas went to Indian professionals wanting to come and work in the US, Jacobs admitted.

The relationship of the US with the business community of India is very good, she stated while making a special mention of leading Indian business groups like Nasscom. Jacobs also had a special meet with various Indian business groups in New Delhi during her last visit to India.

Indian professionals benefiting from US H-1B visas-Since more than 50 percent of the US H-1B visas and L1 visas are issued by the US to Indian people, this measure has proved to be of great benefit to the Indian professionals, Jacobs maintained.

Details of the US H-1B visa system explained to Indians to ensure fair use--Continuous efforts are made by the US from time to time to explain the detailed procedure of the US H-1B visa procedure to Indians, Jacobs said.

The US is focusing on education to ensure fairness in the US work visa process, she asserted. The US does not want foreigners to play with the rules of the US visa process, especially the US work visas, and different presentations and outreach programs are organized to explain the requirements and the eligibility criteria of the US H-1B Visa system to ensure that all applying for these visas are abiding by the rules, she quipped.
