Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons conduct a study and reveal that a large number of freshly passed and certified specialist physicians do not find any work for themselves. This number continues to grow over the period of time.
The scenario of medical profession
Many young people in the country take up the studies and choose this field because they’re confident about getting good placement after they complete the course successfully. This profession has been in demand by the youngsters.
However, parents have been warning their young adults not to take up this profession, looking at the job scenario.
There are a series of disciplines like general surgery, neurosurgery, and hematology, nuclear medicine in which medical students specialize and yet they are not able to manage a job for themselves.
The result of the survey
The study indicates that slightly more than 15% of the specialists do not find work even after completing their course successfully. About 31% of them prefer to go for a further training so that they come out with a bright chance of work.
Within a period of 2011 till last year, there was a rise in the number of specialists facing difficulty in locating a job for themselves.
This survey also reveals that more than 35% of the neurosurgeons are jobless even with a degree in their hands. This percentage is only second after 40% of urologists facing the same problem.
The other part of the story
The other part of the story says that the patients have to wait for getting a surgery done because of less availability of doctors.
While looking at the facilities in Ottawa, one would realize that there are number of patients to consult a neurosurgeon and they are unable to do so because of non-availability of specialists.
The mismatch in the wait times and job employment
Across various departments like cardiology, neurology, orthopedic and others patients have been waiting for as long as two years to get surgeries like “knee replacement” done. And there is this study which shows the poor state of employment of specialists. The gap is actually illogical and bears no connection.
There are some who opine that people wait for a long period not in the want of specialists but, due to unavailability of resources. One of the major such resource is the availability of operation theater.
The real issue
Unemployment could always not be due to lack of job, but because the hospitals where these specialists are supposed to work have inadequate resources. This includes infrastructure and even budgetary support too.
Medical profession is always supposed to be a profession which is greatly in demand. So, reading something like this could be unbelievable for many. The fact stands as, Medicos in the country are not getting jobs adequately and the patients too have to wait for a long time to get treated. The situation creates crisis for both the patient and the doctor as they are not able to reach each other.
