Majority of White Americans to end by 2050
by Christine M - December 17, 2009
United States, December 17: According to the latest Census Bureau projections announced Wednesday, White Americans will become minorities around the year 2050. And the reason for this is strict immigration policies and the recent recession that has resulted in fewer foreigners entering the boundary of US.

This latest report has updated the last year’s projections according to which the majority of white Americans were estimated to end in 2042. The change from the last year’s projections is because the earlier estimate had not taken into consideration the decline in the number of foreigners coming into the US because of global crisis and strict immigration laws especially after the terror attacks dating September 11, 2001.
At present, out of the total population of US amounting to 308 million, nearly two thirds account for non-Hispanic white people.
However, as per new projections, the total milieu of US will move to 399 million by the year 2050 and the whites will make up nearly 49.9 percent of the total population of US.
Meanwhile, Blacks, on the other hand, will constitute nearly 12.2 percent, almost same as their present percentage. The percentage of Hispanics will jump from the 15 percent (at present) to nearly 28 percent by the year 2050.
As per the expectations, Asians are likely to see an increase in their percentage from the present rate of 4.4 to nearly 6 percent by 2050.
There will also be a delay of around eight years or so in the minority children becoming the majority. The report projects the minority kids will become the majority in 2031 as against the earlier projected year of 2023.
Also, the older population aged 85 and above is expected to triple by the year 2050, reaching to 18.6 millions.
The projections made by the report of the Census Bureau should be used as a useful guide since there are a host of reasons responsible for the projected or estimated shift in demographics. Some of the factors are immigration laws, the speed of economic recovery, disasters (natural/unnatural) and cultural changes.
The agency has also made projections which are based on high immigration rates (based on more liberal immigration rules coupled with increased rate of economic recovery of the country) and low immigration rates ( in case there is no change in the current immigration policies of the country while the economic recovery continues to show improvements).
Under the present scenario with no new immigrants being allowed into the US, the whites will continue to be a majority in the year 2050 and will comprise nearly 58 percent of the total population of the US. This will also increase the share of Hispanics to 21 percent due to younger milieu and high rates of fertility.
