Kids understand racism by age nine- Study

November 27: According to a recent study at Rush University in Chicago and Yale University in Connecticut, USA, children become aware about racial discrimination quite early in their life.

They gain awareness about such discriminations at nine years of age.

Giving details about the study findings, associate executive director of the Rush NeuroBehavioral Center at Rush University, Clark McKown said that majority of children understand that there is racism in the world and people have stereotypes.

The study has defied the common notion that children are innocent to understand the racism and discrimination.

"I think that would be surprising to many people, that by second or third grade a lot of kids get it, they get that there's racism in the world and they understand what it is,” McKown added.

The study examined the stereotype-consciousness of the kids. The awareness of kids about racial discrimination and bias can have a detrimental effect not only in their everyday situations but also on their achievement, the research affirmed.

Nearly 124 children in the age group of 5-11 years formed part of the study.

The results of the research suggest the role played by comprehensive programs and educational policies to reduce stereotypes in the society and also curb the disastrous consequences on the career of children.

Racism and discrimination is quite common in many countries and immigrants, especially Indians and their children are on the receiving end of stigmatization while living in foreign lands.

Whether its their school, college or the neighborhood, racial discrimination is a serious evil that is not conducive to the positive growth and development of the children.

What is needed is the courage to challenge such widespread ideologies in different parts of the world. Only then can we look forward to a happy future for our children.
