Downgrading Quality – Going through the most recent reports on employment quality from Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist for CIBC World Markets, one can conclude that getting a job isn’t alright after all. It underlines the value of employment in Canada that has deteriorated over a period of time, influenced chiefly by the fact that most of the current growth in jobs has entailed self-employment and lower-paying jobs.
Earnings – From a viewpoint of quality, the rush in self-employment decreases the general quality of employment. By and large it is down to the fact that, a self-employed household earns very much less than a 15 per cent to what a regular employee does," the report said. The CIBC report also underlined that self-employment have grown by two per cent in the previous year. It is twice the rate of staff employment.
Perceptions Are Subjective – Benjamin Tal admitted in an interview that assuming self-employment as an inferior economic activity is based only when we consider financial aspects, and for several people, it's in fact a better option. The Deputy Chief Economist also acknowledged that a lot of people pick self-employment themselves. However, he didn’t rule out that many are also forced into this job due to tough job market conditions. As per Statistics Canada, overall employment surged to 17,500. 31,100 in self-employment offset the 13,600 who dropped from the workforce.
Perpetual Decline – Data from Statistics Canada illustrates that employment in Canada swell by more than 180,000 workers the previous year, but majority of that growth was in the first half of 2011 and employment in fact dipped by 55,000 in the final quarter. Mr. Tal further stated that the slump in employment quality is here to stay and has been continuing for almost two decades. Of all the full-time jobs only 0.4% was high paying.
Turnaround – Any hopes for a turnaround have to be withheld for almost seven to eight years as an evacuation of baby boomers from the workers results in labor scarcities, he said. This will transfer the job market in Canada into an entirely seller's market."I anticipate a tremendous boost in quality of employment as I can foresee a shortage of laborers in Canada," he said. "We are at in the last stages of the process of poor employment quality.”
Greater Competence – Tal also added that the top quality jobs that should be available in years to come will demand greater competence, and he forecasted multi-task, extremely skillful manufacturing posts will be amongst those having to be filled. On top of it all, several other expertise in areas for example engineering, software design and computing.
