Increased number of international students to be welcomed in BC

Canada, 13th October: British Columbia has announced its plans to increase the number of foreign students studying in this Canadian province.

B.C. to welcome increased international students--According to plans of Premier Christy Clark, Douglas College will welcome more overseas students for studying in B.C.(British Columbia). She has highlighted the important role played by foreign students in the economy.

Hence, she intends to increase the number of foreign student enrollment in BC in the coming four years.

This is aimed to provide a boost to the economy of B.C., Premier Clark asserted.

More international students mean more jobs in B.C.--She maintained that presence of foreign students in B.C. has helped in creation of several new jobs in the province, thereby increased contributions to the BC economy.

Citing the recent figures, she said that the presence of around 94,000 international students in British Columbia has resulted in creation of 22,000 new jobs here.

Total contributions from international students amounted to $1.25 billion. Hence, there is a need for increasing international students by nearly 50 percent, she clarified.

Achieving such targets will help provide jobs to around 9,000 people in B.C. and will provide $500 million in B.C. economy, Clark affirmed.

International students create increased facilities for local students--A common myth about international students is that they are a burden on taxpayers since they don’t pay for the infrastructure and services used by them.

Another misconception is that international students snatch away seats from local Canadian students.

However, both these myths are wholly baseless and without any truth.

International students studying at Douglas College pay freight for the infrastructure and the services used by them. Moreover, foreign students studying in BC institutions help increased offerings to local students.

And the fee paid by international students studying at Douglas College is around five times the amount paid by local students.

Due to increased fee paid by foreign students, Douglas College created additional 375 seats for Canadian students and hired nearly 55 new faculty members this year.

So, Douglas College in B.C. is all set to welcome nearly 1,000 international students from 50 different nations, which is up by 75 percent from figures of 2008.
