Immigrants in the UK living to get UK citizenship

United Kingdom, 13th September: The latest data by Eurostat has revealed that majority of immigrants living in the UK aim to get citizenship of the nation.

The figures by Eurostat, the statistical office of the Europe, suggest that UK has granted citizenship to maximum number of immigrants as compared to any other European nation.
As per the figures made available, nearly 20 percent of new EU citizens are found to have been granted UK citizenship since the year 2002. A total of 1,008,500 immigrants were granted UK citizenship between the years 2002 and 2008.
Out of the total immigrants in the UK, almost 2.4 million immigrated from non-EU nations while nearly 1.6 percent came from member states.
Britain has nearly four million immigrants, thus making the UK as the third top destination for immigrants in EU. So, the percentage of immigrants in the UK among its total population is around 7 percent.
Spain and Germany are the nations having greater number of immigrants living there. The percentage of immigrants in other nations like Bulgaria, Poland, Slovakia and Romania even less than one percent of the total population of such nations. Spain has nearly 5.6 million foreign nationals living there while Germany has seven million immigrants staying there, the data maintains.
The fact why the recent figures reveal such a huge difference between the UK immigrants’ figures revealed earlier and the actual data revealed now is because the earlier figures of UK immigrants were wildly underestimated, the critics maintain.
As the recent figures of immigrants in the UK came to the fore, the pledge to curb the crisis fuelled by higher UK immigration levels has been strengthened further by the UK immigration minister Damian Green.
Reiterating about his government’s tough policy to control immigration in the UK, the immigration minister said that strict action will be initiated against those who are not entitled to live here legally in a bid to ensure best protection of UK borders.
UK needs to have more sustainable levels of immigrants living in the UK on a permanent basis, the minister asserted.
As present, the number of immigrants in the UK is 196,000.
