Immigrants in the UK beat job crunch
by Harleen Kaur - October 6, 2010
United Kingdom, 6th October: Around 139,000 immigrants in the UK have been successful in beating one of the worst global crisis by getting employment in the nation in the past two years, findings of a recent report state.

At one hand, a large number of Britons have been losing jobs in the UK during recession, the immigrants have been successfully finding jobs in the UK, the report maintains.
The number of British workforce has shown a fall by around 654,000. The report seems to put a big question over the plans of the UK government to introduce huge cuts in the UK immigration levels, especially from non-EU nations. Its being increasingly felt by Treasury officials in the UK that since immigrant workers in the UK contribute significantly towards the UK economy by paying taxes, hence, the proposed cuts on immigrants to be allowed to the UK each year will affect tax receipts to a great extent.
It has been highlighted by the report findings that in stark contrast to contribution by the UK immigrants to the nation’s economy, the Briton workers are draining the Treasury department by claiming unemployment benefits. At present, there are around 3.85 million immigrant workers in the UK after a rise of 114,000 immigrant workers in a span of one year.
According to the report by Financial Times, out of total immigrant workers in the UK, around 100,000 coming to the nation hail from non-EU nations. As per current UK immigration rules, EU citizens enjoy several rights including the right to live and work in the UK, which is not available to non-EU migrants. And with the UK government reiterating to considerably reduce the immigration levels down to tens of thousands, the damage on the UK economy will be noteworthy, feel several UK ministers including Vince Cable, the UK Business Secretary.
Even the Treasury officials also feel that limit on migrant workers in the UK will worsen finances of the country. Immigrant workers are preferred by a large number of UK employers primarily due to the fact that immigrants accept lower wages and work considerably harder. Nonetheless, the critics of UK immigration are up in arm against the current UK immigration levels saying public services including housing, water, transport and energy get overwhelmed due to increasing burden of the immigrants.
