Immigrants considered burden by majority of Tennesseans

United States, 10th February: Immigrants are considered a huge burden by majority of US people, findings of a recent poll indicate.

However, still, many don’t favor a crackdown on undocumented aliens since that would result in their deportation from the US, the poll maintains.

A recent poll undertaken by Vanderbilt University for the state of Tennessee in the US shows that opinion of nearly 70 percent Tennesseans is that foreigners coming to the US snatch away employment from the US natives.

And another fact coming to the surface during the poll was that more than half of the Tennesseans want the undocumented immigrants to be given a route to becoming US citizens and don’t want the immigrants living without a valid immigration status to be shunted out of the US.

Moreover, Tennesseans also asserted on offering US citizenship to all US-born children irrespective of the fact whether their parents are Americans or aliens.

Presently, Tennessee is home to more than 100,000 undocumented aliens and this is a major fiscal strain on Tennessee.

According to an estimate, such immigrants strain the taxpayers by around $285 million each year, which comes to be $122 per household of this US state.

Still, Tennesseans do not want removal of such aliens from their nation, the poll findings maintain.

Among the major issues surfacing during the recent poll include addressing birthright citizenship, undocumented immigration, mass deportations etc.

The number of Tennesseans favoring deportations for undocumented aliens is just 36 percent while the number of those favoring provision of US citizenship to undocumented immigrants without amnesty is 1 percent.

Meanwhile, 78 percent of Tennesseans asked for a harsh attitude including heavy penalties towards the firms or businesses found to be hiring undocumented immigrants while 62 percent wanted such employers to be sent behind bars by the US administration.

Tennesseans attitude towards immigration different based on their education-level—

Level of education of Tennesseans reflected variations in their attitudes towards immigration in the US. While, nearly 80 percent of high-school educated Tennesseans considered immigrants a strain on the US but the same view was shared by nearly 47 percent of Tennesseans with college education.

Nearly two-third of Tennesseans aged below 45 years also considered immigration a burden for the US while the percentage of those aged above 65 years having same attitude towards immigrants was 72 percent.
