Guidelines for getting an appointment for a US Visa

United States, January 22: Want to seek US visa for visiting America on a short visit but don’t know how? Read on to know all the relevant information.

First of all, you need to consider the period of your stay and the purpose of your visit to US. If you want to stay for a short period of time ( say, up to 6 months), you will need to make an application for a non-immigrant visa. One can visit US for studying, business or for tourism.

For getting non-immigrant visa from the American embassy (and its consulates in Canada), you need to clear interview (face-to-face interview) with the immigrant officials. You can pay a fee of $8.40 CAD (non-refundable) either by American Express, MasterCard or Visa.

You can choose from the available options for the interview by either selecting any of the available Consulates General in Canada or in the US Embassy in the city of Ottawa.

Considering the type of visa you are applying for, you need to fill and submit the requisite application form, i.e. DS-156 form, DS-157 form and DS-158 form, along with a few requisite documents. Also, you must provide a document in proof of your legal status in Canada, a passport-size photograph, application fee and a passport which will be valid for the next six months.

It generally takes a period of 6-10 weeks for getting an appointment for a US visa in America’s Consulates in Canada. And, you need to bear in mind that there is a scarcity of appointments for a US visa and such appointments are booked immediately once they are available.

No doubt, you may find the entire process of getting US visa right from filing application to the final stage. Hence, you can either choose to do all by yourself or take the help of any of the professionals engaged in the related field, by paying them a fixed fee.
