Green Card Processing may take longer than expected

One can enter USA through various ways. If someone has a relative in US then the entry becomes easier through this person. Else, if one holds a skill and is in a profession which is quite in demand in USA, then also things become easier.

Getting a Green Card
If someone has applied for a “Green Card” then he would not be allowed to leave US till he gets an approval on his application.

In case he has to go out of US then he needs to take prior permission from Homeland Security Department. This is the Department which looks into the processing of Green Card and Immigration related issues.

Those who enter USA as students will have to apply for a new visa if there is a change in the University and College.

There are cases when one does not travel even after getting a visa, then they has to apply for a new visa when they plan to travel in future. The old one would not have any impact on the new application.

Who can apply?

Green Card is issued to a person who has been living in US for a minimum of 5 years consecutively. In fact people who have been living in the US on the basis of asylum can also apply for green card, provided they have stayed in the country for 4 years.

Processing time

Processing of Green card is matter of category and backlogs lying with the Department. It may take a few months to even a few years to obtain such a Card.

The average time to get a Green card may vary from 3 to 6 months. However, it completely varies from case to case. The deciding factors for getting a green card are sponsorship, submission of all required documents without any mistake, results of biometric submissions and the personal interview. These factors can turn things around and either accelerate or decelerate the process.

There are various categories like sponsored immigration, employment immigration, special immigration and other types for filing an application.

Family based applications are approved within 6 to 9 months. In fact, in most of the cases it takes 2 to 14 years to get a green card for a family member.

Employees may get a Green Card within 6 months, but in some cases it has also taken 5 years to get such a card. Due to backlog in the current period, it may take even 9 years to get a Green card.

The exact time taken to receive a Green card can actually not be calculated, however, the processing time totally depends upon the backlogs and category of applications made.
