A glimpse of the Policy on Immigration Marriage Fraud

Policy on Immigration Marriage fraud has brought concerns for many

In many of the reported cases, it is observed that “marriage frauds” in immigration are happening only to receive the status of “permanent resident”. There are people who sponsor someone and get married; this immigrant after coming to Canada has no intention of living with the partner.
A new policy has been made which will crackdown the fraud cases of immigration happening through marriage. This policy says that the sponsored spouses will get a conditional permanent resident status for two years.
Though the announcement has invited a lot of criticism as people fear that this kind of a forced activity would increase domestic violence as the couples are required to live together legitimately for a minimum period of two years. Someone who does not comply with the policy will face a revocation of permanent residency and will also be deported back to his country and may face criminal charges.
In spite of considerable number of such cases occurring on the ground of the nation, there are many who have opposed the same. They are worried about the children who will be losing either of the parents if a “sponsored spouse” is deported back. They also fear that the entire issue would cause a lot of emotional discomfort to all involved in the relationship.
Some feel that the policy would not bring any good news to the women folk as they are exposed to a lot of domestic violence and emotional abuse till now. Also, if a woman comes from outside and marries a Canadian man, she will think several times to report her story of getting abused. She will always have the fear of being deported if she informs the concerned department about the torture she might be undergoing. Back home also, she would not be accepted due to social stigma. Hence she will have to tolerate everything for at least two years’ time from marriage date.
Some experts also opine that new immigrants have little knowledge about their rights in the country, so they would take time to gather information and report against their spouse who is a Canadian.
The government is assured about the policy as they understand the crime due to “fraud marriages” and they also inform that such policies are already there in the counterparts like USA and Australia. Hence they see no reason for not implementing the same in Canada.
