English test compulsory for UK spousal visa applicants

United Kingdom, 10th June: As per the latest announcement by the UK Home Secretary, all aspirants for UK spousal visa will have to undertake a compulsory English test from this fall (September).

So, if you hail from outside the EU (Eastern Union) and desire to live in the UK, then you will have to provide proof that you possess a basic command over the English language.

The move announced by the UK Prime Minister David Cameron yesterday is in tune with the other nations across Europe stepping up to introduce stricter immigration rules after growing concerns regarding increasing jobless rates and the difficulties faced bynewcomers to successfully integrate in their new homes.

To clear the Basic English test, the prospective immigrants will have to go for 40 to 50 hours of tuition and gain the required command over the language.

Meanwhile, good news for all those worried about their lack of English language skills is that they will be allowed to repeat the English test until they clear it successfully.

Unveiling the latest measures to be a part of the new UK immigration rules, Home Secretary Theresa May said that the ability to speak English must be a condition for all those wanting to live permanently in the UK.

She added that the new English test will enable in removing cultural barrier, promote better integration and protect social and public services in the UK.

The new move by the UK immigration will result in 10 percent reduction in the number of UK visa applications especially from the applicants belonging to India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is aimed to curb growing number of sham or fake marriages to immigrate into the UK. Also, it will limit the number of UK work visas and regulate those coming on UK student visas, May clarified.

The new English test will assess the ability of any applicant to give introduction of self, ask basic directions and follow the person who is speaking slowly.

The current rules require to make application for a two-year visa to settle in the UK. Only then can they apply indefinite leave to remain in the UK after clearing another test on UK life and language.

In the year 2009, a total of 21,000 migrants were allowed to live in the UK for an indefinite period.
