Discontent at allowing Haitians into Canada, US
by Mary Jones - January 19, 2010
Canada, January 19: While the world steps forward to extend help and relief to the Haitians, the victims of devastating earthquake, concessions being provided to Haitians by governments of various countries is spreading discontent considering the dangers involved in such provisions.

The reasons for such discontent are that among various Haitians being welcomed into US or Canada might include a significant number of criminals or bad elements. And, the fact is that there is no way to discriminate criminals from among the deserving Haitians.
Also, while we try to rehabilitate all immigrant Haitians allowed into our respective countries, it will certainly involve spending sufficient funds for providing health care, shelter and other basic needs for the Haitian immigrants.
So, the question before us is to see whether it will be advisable to allow such people into our land (considering its effect on our finances) just for the sake that we want to help those in dire need or would we be inviting danger into our homelands?
Well, we need to think and ponder on the truth that in the world, there are millions of people in deplorable conditions or have undergone some kind of tragedy or even man-made suffering.
We must consider and choose priorities from different choices available before us and then take any decision. Such should be the responsibility of the immigration systems of our respective countries.
Consider, for example, the immigration policies of Canada, which has special provisions and laws to protect those who are at imminent risk of falling prey to persecution under the political laws of their respective countries.
And, if we still want to welcome Haitians into Canada, then who not we extend such provisions to the millions of sufferers in South Asia or Africa?
Another issue worth consideration is that if we let Haitians into Canada, and if any tragedy strikes any other country in the coming times, then can we say no to the sufferers from such country or countries? This is the question that needs consideration and our answer before we proceed ahead with our efforts to aid suffering Haiti immigrants by allowing entry into Canada.
