Canada releases new Canada Citizenship Guide

Canada, 23rd March: The new Canada Citizenship Guide has been released by the Canada immigration department.

Guide will help in preparation of Canadian Citizenship test---

Aptly titled ‘Discover Canada: the Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship’, the Canada citizenship guide is meant for helping Canada permanent residents prepare for their test of Canada citizenship.

Speaking about the changes introduced in the latest version of the Canada citizenship guide, Jason Kenney, the Citizenship and Immigration Minister, said the study guide will be of significant help for newcomers making application for getting permanent residency in Canada.

The guide will equip them will basic knowledge and understanding of not just their rights in their new nation but also their obligations towards Canada, states Kenney in a press release.

Among the topics covered in the new Canada study guide include gay rights, female genital mutilation, Canada war of 1812, honor killings, forced marriages, abuse of a spouse and ‘gender-based violence’.

All the updated content with regard to the history, values, institutions and other important facts has been included in the new Canada Citizenship Guide and it will replace the old version of the citizenship guide released way back in the year 2009.

The Guide asserts---Leave prejudices behind---

The new Canadian Citizenship guide will be handed over to new immigrants moving to Canada and will provide instructions to the newcomers, especially those hailing from war-torn or violent nations, to leave behind all ‘hateful prejudices’ and extreme behavior back home.

It also reiterates the fact that Canada will have zero-tolerance for any forced marriages and any other ‘barbaric cultural practices’.

The guide stresses on the responsibilities of newcomers in Canada. All immigrants and newcomers in Canada must obey all Canadian laws and must respect the rights of their fellow-beings while ensuring equality of women as well as men in Canadian society.

Also includes gay rights---

It may be worth mentioned that the earlier version of the Canada citizenship guide did not include references to the topics of same-sex marriage and gay rights. The guide provides equal treatment as well as protection to lesbians and gays while extending them the right to civil marriages in Canada.

Several opposition critics are all praise for inclusion of such topics in the new version by the Conservative government.
