Canada immigration to tighten rules for marriage visa

The latest move is in response to the concerns of the Canadian government for fake marriages between Indians and Indo-Canadians.

Speaking about the latest idea of the Canadian immigration department, the minister of citizenship and immigration Jason Kenney stated that the whole thing is really disgusting and added that money is involved behind the working of the industry of fake marriages.

The statement by the Canadian immigration minister came just 10 before the visit of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to Toronto for bilateral meeting and the G-20 Summit.

While reacting to the recent report by an Indo-Canadian woman who complained that she was a victim of a marriage fraud, Senator Kenney said it is quite difficult to prove the marriage fraud once the spouses enter Canada.

Recently, a 22-year-old woman was cheated by an Indian man who married her just to seek entry into Canada. Once he was in Canada, he did not even bother to contact her, added Kenney.

The incidence of Canada marriage visa fraud involving an Indo-Canadian woman is not a single case. In fact, there are several cases involving marriage visa frauds to get entry into Canada, especially in BC (British Columbia) which has a fairly large percentage of Indo-Canadians living there.

Hence, to put a full stop on such fake marriages to get Canada marriage visa, some serious steps need to be taken, asserted Kenney. Opinions from advocates of victims of Canada marriage visa fraud from Ottawa are being sought to help provide a solution to such sham marriages.

This includes adoption of a system in Canada in which sponsored spouses are given legal status or citizenship in their new home town only after they have stayed with their respective marriage partners for a certain fixed period of time.

Currently, Australia and the US have a similar system concerning marriage visas.

Nearly two years ago, Canada had tried to check the menace of fake marriages as a ticket to get a Canada visa for living in Canada.
