More than 250,000 immigrants can expect to enter Canada sometime next year. This announcement has been made by Immigration Minister Chris Alexander, only a few days ago.
The high and low on immigration
The average immigrant intake has been around 250,000 per year for the last many years.
The number of immigrants used to be somewhere between 280,000 between the period of 1988 to 2010. And now it is 2014 when a similar story would be reported in Canada, announced Alexander.
Alexander also expresses his pride to be able to continue with sustained levels of immigration year after year.
A report shows that almost 1.8 million immigrants have become permanent residents since the administration went to Conservatives in 2006. And now many of these immigrants have become citizens of the country or they are on the way.
Most of the immigrants have been coming from China followed by Philippines and India, as disclosed in the annual report.
WE and France also have major countries where from a high number of immigration has taken place.
Although Alexander makes it clear that Canada does not prefer a particular country or a region for taking in immigrants.
The focus of immigration
Immigration Minister informs that the aim is to get the “best and the brightest”. The focus of immigration would also be on ensuring family reunification as well as a new home would be provided for the refugees too.
He emphasizes that immigration would be linked to economy of the country.
Alexander says, “63% economic immigration in the year 2014 is higher than what the country have had before.”
He also informed that processing of immigration and visa applications are concentrated upon and every possible effort is made to see to it that the delay is as less as possible.
The past trend
The trend in the past indicates that immigrants move to Canada to work or to study and they live here permanently. When they become permanent residents, there is no possibly that they would not turn out to be citizens of Canada tomorrow.
The plans of Government
Experts believe that there should be a balance maintained by Government of Canada when it comes to costs and benefits so that people have enough confidence in immigration program.
However, immigration will always be associated with lot many unknown factors since it involves humans. It is practically difficult for the Government to anticipate the number of applications coming under various categories.
Immigration has always been a priority for Canada. With the aging population, the focus is more on this subject because, the country will eventually have to depend upon people coming from outside to fill up vacancies and get the work completed. For this, a detailed planning and a thorough preparation are needed. The time has come when one has to evaluate the effect of immigrants on economy and other services available to them. After all it cannot be forgotten that these immigrants share the resources too.
