Canada to admit a record number of newcomers

Canada, 20th July: Canada says it will allow a record number of immigrants in the current year.

Record number of provincial nominee immigrants to be allowed this year--As per the announcement by Canada immigration minister Jason Kenney, Canada will admit a total of 40,000 immigrants under its provincial nominee program this year.
This means the immigrants to be admitted into Canada will be around five times the immigrants allowed into the nation in the year 2005. Canada accepted 36,428 provincial nominee immigrants in the year 2010.
And the number of total immigrants welcomed by Canada was stated to be the highest in last couple of decades. Provincial nominee programs are of great significance for the nation and help spread the advantages of immigration throughout the nation, highlighted Kenney.
Different Canadian provinces are given authority to select immigrants under the provincial nominee programs depending on their respective economic requirements.
Can Canada quadruple its immigration intake—Whether Canada needs to increase its annual immigration intake to around 300,000 or not?, is the most debated issue in Canada. Although, several studies have reiterated on an imminent need for increasing immigration levels in Canada, but Kenney is not in favor of such a move.
He said that although studies have suggested the need for increasing immigration levels keeping in view the present worker-to-old-age dependents ratio, but the nation can’t afford to do so. Kenney maintains that Canada neither has ability nor the resources needed for integration of around one million new immigrants annually.
The nation cannot afford to strain its real estate and housing markets apart from burdening its public education and health care, asserted Kenney.
Allow immigrants on the basis of their economic potential--The immigration minister further maintained that Canada needs to focus on allowing immigrants possessing skills and work experience and contributing positively towards Canadian economy.
As of now, out of every 10 immigrants coming to Canada, just three are chosen on the basis of their economic ability, he informed, while another 30 percent happen to be dependents or spouses of such immigrant individuals.
And we need to increase this ratio by cutting immigrant numbers in other Canada immigration categories including family class. Even results of several immigration surveys have argued for limiting immigration intake in Canada.
