California Governor signs bill for driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, vetoes Trust Act’

This is welcoming news for large number of immigrants awaiting to get driver’s licenses in California.
Gov. approves driver’s licenses for California immigrants—As a result of the latest effort by Governor Brown, around 350,000 immigrants living in California as undocumented aliens having eligibility for deferred deportation of the US administration will be able to get California driver’s licenses.
And California is only abiding by the laws imposed by the US administration by deciding to issue California driver’s licenses for such undocumented immigrants. This was affirmed by Gil Duran, an official spokesperson for Governor Brown.
Giving details, Duran said Governor Brown feels that the US government must follow reforms to immigration by providing a legal pathway to US citizenship.
Since US President Barack Obama has already given recognition to such immigrants, the next step ought to be offering them eligibility for California driver’s licenses, adds Duran.
AB 2189 to ask DMV to issue driver’s licenses--The bill AB 2189 signed this Sunday will ask California Department of Motor Vehicles to grant driver’s licenses to young undocumented immigrants getting qualified for US Deferred Deportation program.
AB 2189 was sponsored by Gil Cedillo, a L.A.(Los Angeles) Democratic Assemblyman and efforts have been going on for around ten years to get the bill become a law.
While opponents feel such a bill will encourage undocumented immigrants; Cedillo was elated at the approval to AB 2189 by Brown. He claimed it as a big victory for not just the immigrants in California but the whole California.
It may be reminded that Obama administration will facilitate deferring of deportation for thousands of young undocumented immigrants and also offer them legal US work permits to live and work in the US for a period of two years.
The condition is that such immigrants must have arrived in the US before attaining 16 years and should be below 31 years as of now.
Gov. vetoes ‘Trust Act’—Governor Brown also vetoed ‘Trust Act’ known as AB 1081. Sponsored by Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman, the bill could have led to curtailing deportation of unlawful immigrants involved in non-violent or minor offences.
Ammiano’s aim of sponsoring AB 1081 was to limit using local prisons for immigration enforcement, thus saving time and money.
