Border Screening Snaring Fugitives
by Vinita Amrit - October 31, 2011
When people cross borders like streets, it presents a strain on the law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Bridling The Wild Horse of Crime: In the recent past there have more than ten thousand instances of criminals of all hues ranging from murderers, rapists and drug peddlers being apprehended at the borders and ports of the UK. This has been possible because of the system of screening passengers in advance. This is a revelation that was made by the Minister for immigrations, Damian Green.
Since the time of its introduction in 2005, around 52 arrests are made on an average every week at ports and airports across the country. The carriers transmit details of everyone on board including passengers and crew that are due to arrive at UK ports electronically to the authorities. In view of this, Mr. Green said that the UK is doing everything that is humanly possible to keep a check on the perpetrators of crime so that they are checked right before they commit any crime, thus keeping the UK’s borders safe.
Further Broadening The Net And Narrowing Down The Search:
A dedicated Border Policing Command will be in place from 2013 which will monitor and strengthen security at the borders of the UK further, providing not just co-ordination but also leadership on a national level which will be based on a single national threat management strategy.
A recent success of the strategy was brought to the fore when a person was apprehended by the authorities at Manchester Airport who was on his way from Switzerland when he was charged with sexual grooming. Authorities had received an alert from Swiss officials that he may be headed their way planning to commit sexual offence with a 16-year-old boy.
Other cases detected as a part of this strategy included a rapist on the run since 14 years when he was en route to Cairo, the Egyptian capital as well as a holidaymaker who had spent close to GBP 37,500 for his trip using credit card details obtained fraudulently.
A Sigh of Relief In Store: All this has been possible because of the fact that the system regularly screens more than 90% of the flights that originate outside the European Union and close to 55% of flights that either originate or terminate in the UK.
These could be the start of an international network which will ensure law abiding citizens of the world that the world is going to be a far better place to live in.
