Average time for regaining employment in Canada increases

Ontario, Canada, 19th March: Unemployment rate in Canada has slipped down to 8.2 percent in February, 2010, undoubtedly, but there has been an increase in the average time for getting rehired in Canada, the latest Statistics Canada figures say.

As compared to the earlier time of 14.3 weeks for regaining employment in Canada, an average Canadian has to wait at least for 19.1 weeks before getting rehired at any job in Canada. This is despite a decline of 0.1 percent in the unemployment rate in Canada in February 2010.

In other words, at least every one in five Canadians remain jobless for a minimum period of 27 weeks. Nearly a year ago, the situation was slightly better as the ratio was one in 10.

The situation for Canadians in search of jobs in Canada is certainly desperate and has left many of them completely frustrated. They seem to receive no offers for work in Canada even after sending resumes to hundreds of companies.

Quite a hard fact it may seem to digest for many, especially when the big claims are being made about slipping unemployment rates and increasing jobs in Canada, but one cannot deny that nearly 1.5 million jobless in Canada are finding it hard to get rehired in Canada.

Danielle Zietsmam, a Statscan economist confirmed that there has been an increase in the longer time span of unemployment in Canada.

That’s not all, to complicate the things further for the unemployed Canadians; many of the jobless in Canada have completely exhausted their savings.

Hence, they cannot claim for receiving benefits of Employment Insurance in Canada.

Talking about the decline in the unemployment rate in Canada by 0.1 percent, Statistics Canada has stated that the reason is the full-time jobs gained by 60,000 Canadians and 39,000 part-time jobs in Canada in the month of February 2010.

Remaining without work for longer durations can worsen the scenario for re-entering the labor market. Moreover, one cannot keep updated with latest skills in the job market. The ability not just to save but also to spend goes down as with the decline in the earning potential and even the expectations for any person remaining unemployed for longer periods.
