Asylum-seekers to be moved by Australia

Australia, 20th October: Australia will be moving the vulnerable asylum-seekers out of detention centers into the community.

The move will also include releasing children from the detention centers.

This is being done after facilities at several detention centers in Australia came under attack inviting criticism from far and wide.

Announcing about the decision, Julia Gillard, the Australian Prime Minister stated that significant numbers of families and minors will be moved into community accommodations in what is being termed as a more human approach. Also, children will be entitled to attend school.

Protracted detention can prove to have a negative effect on the growth and mental health of the children in detention. Moreover, it is not thought to be an Australian way of treating the kids behind bars, added Gillard.

The move will apply to around hundreds of families and children facing detention in order to enable them move into communities by mid next year, Gillard maintained, although she did not reveal the exact figures. All such people will be, although, under strict vigil and liable to regular checks at specific intervals.

In another move, Australia is going to construct two additional detention centers in order to ease the burden on present facilities which find it hard to deal with around 5,000 migrants through 100 boats this year, the officers revealed.

The isolated Christmas Island in Australia is struggling to deal with full capacity forcing many to sleep in tents and triggering riotous protests by several inmates in Darwin and Sydney resulting in death of one Fijian.

Meanwhile, as per Chris Bowen, the new Australian immigration minister, Australia still seems to have the toughest schedule of detention in the developed nations but maintained that there is, undoubtedly, a much better way to deal with families and children.

Australian immigration minister stated that reviews of cases of each family will be made before making final decision about moving them into community homes maintained by charity groups and churches under the direct supervision of the Australian immigration department.

While reviewing the cases of families in detention centers in Australia, priority will be to the most vulnerable children and families including those affected by any torture or trauma and to enable their immediate release, added Bowen.
