The department warns that "you must meet all the requirements when completing your application." It would be a tragedy waiting five years on the list only to discover that when you apply, you somehow missed something.

Changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Changes to Temporary Foreign Worker Program are effective from 1st April 2011. These amendments are intended to help us better protect your rights when you come to work in Canada by ensuring that employers comply with the requirements of their job.

When applying for work permits, employers will be evaluated on:

Strict criteria to confirm the seriousness of the job (Truthfulness);

History of compliance with the commitments outlined in the offer of employment to foreign workers hired in the last two years (essentially the same);

Compliance is required with the laws of federal, provincial and territorial governments.

In cases where employers fail to meet their commitments with foreign workers, they may be ineligible for recruitment of foreign labor for a period of two years.

You can apply for a work permit as soon as you receive written evidence of the job offer or contract and the notice of the labor market (AMT) of HRSDC. In cases where the AMT is not required, you can apply when you have written evidence of the job offer from your employer.

To work in Canada, you may need a temporary resident visa.

A temporary resident visa is an official document issued by an agent that is placed in your passport. It serves to confirm that you have fulfilled the general requirements for admission to Canada as a temporary resident.

It is also to be remembered that the family members include spouses, common-law spouse, dependent children and dependent child of a dependent child.

Dependent children accompanying you can study in Canada. Their applications for study permits must be submitted at the same time as yours. If they are to arrive after you, they must obtain a study permit before coming to Canada.

When you get to the point of entry into Canada, an officer will make a final determination. Note that you must select the Canadian visa office in your country of residence in your country of nationality or the country where you are legally established for at least a year.
