Britons held after Iraqi shooting

Two British servicemen have been arrested in Iraq after shots were allegedly fired at local police officers.

An official said he had been informed by the British military that the men were undercover soldiers in civilian clothes.

He said: “They were driving a civilian car and were dressed in civilian clothes when a shooting took place between them and Iraqi patrols.

“We are investigating and an Iraqi judge is on the case questioning them.”

The Ministry of Defence refused to comment on reports that the men were working undercover and said it is not yet known exactly why they have been held.

A spokesman said: “We can confirm that two military personnel were detained by Iraqi authorities earlier today.”
