Canada has a huge backlog of immigration applications that is more than 900,000 and in addition to this there are hundreds and thousands of deserving people who apply every year. There are many people who have been waiting for years in order to get their applications processed. The federal government complained that due to the first come- first served immigration process, individuals having skills and experience that are required by the employers are not been able to be admitted.
Following this, in the summer of 2008, amendments to the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Protection Act were passed, in order to come to grips with this ever rising problem. After the changes that were introduced, Citizenship and Immigration Canada are no longer burdened to process all the immigration applications. Now, they are authorized to return certain applications and return the corresponding application fees without bothering to process it. The amendments also authorizes the Minister of Immigration, Diane Finley, to issue instructions to set priorities for some skills and occupations that would allow a more progressive filling up of the labour shortages in Canada.
Currently, the federal government is busy in determining the fields that are to be given priorities.
