One of the Most Wanted of America is now officially the Least wanted of Calgary. Texas fugitive Steven Andrew Hayes has been ordered to be deported from Canada.
During the 90-minute hearing with the Immigration and Refugee Board on Thursday, the convicted sex offender was found to be inadmissible in Canada and was ordered deported to the US.
49-year old Hayes is a convicted sex offender and acknowledged on Thursday of committing crimes against children throughout the US, but swears that he didn’t strike again while hiding in Canada.
Hayes said that he has a disorder that is untreatable and said that he hasn’t broken any laws in Canada from the time he has been here. He also said that they are offenses that he isn’t proud of and has no intend to repeat, ever. He added that he sought the proper treatment to achieve a better mental health status and believes that he has done so.
Hayes, who fled to Canada after being indicted by a grand jury in Denton County, Texas, for drugging and sexually assaulting a 12-year old girl in 2005, said that he can only ask for mercy.
Hayes asked to be set free to return to Texas on his own, complaining that US Marshals will be traveling first class and he will incur the expenses for that. He said that he does not think he is a flight risk.
But Paul Kyba, Immigration and Refugee Board adjudicator, ordered him to remain in custody until he is deported.
Kyba told him that his behavior indicates otherwise and said that he will remain under detention on the grounds that he believes that he would not report for removal if set free.
Hayes admitted using fake identification to cross the Canadian border alt February at Winnipeg. He wrongly informed the border officials that he was here for a skiing holiday.
He said that he was never aware that he was indicted of anything and said that he fled the Texas area solely because he received a threat from a person.
Hayes arrived at the hearing lined by the border guards, wearing a prison-issue blue jumpsuit and sneakers, with his wrists and ankles shackled.
Polite and well-spoken, Hayes mostly answered as ‘yes sir’, as the adjudicator spoke.
During a break, to no one in particular Hayes said- “Ladies and gentlemen, I thank all of you for preserving my dignity to the best of your ability.
