Tow men were detained at immigration at the international terminal at Chennai airport with fake visas on Saturday morning.
39 year old Gangadharan, a Sri Lankan national, who had earlier failed to get a visa for the United States got in touch with one Selvarathinam from Koyembedu in order to help him go to the United States and also paid him Rs. 5 lakh for the same. For this purpose, Selvarathinam introduced Gangadharan to R. Sampath Kumar, who is a resident of Kolathur. According to police, both Sampath Kumar and Ganagdharan booked flight tickets to Canada through Colombo.
In addition to holding a genuine Sri Lankan passport, Gangadharan also carried a duplicate Indian passport, which was provided to him by Sampath Kumar who had a visa to travel to Canada.
The two men planned to exchange their boarding passes after clearing security and immigration in India. It was planned that Smapath Kumar would stay back in Colombo and handover his documents to Gangadharan so that he can go to Canada.
But before the two could board the flight, immigration officials got suspicious and during checking, they found the fake passport with Gangadharan matching with the authentic one which was carried by Sampath.
Both have been remanded to custody.
