The colourful world around us

[inline:1]Everyday, lots of people go through interior decoration books to find out ideas, tips and pictures in order to solve their decorating dilemmas. But you need not worry now, as I’m here to solve all your problems and also to guide you and give you the right decorating tips.

Decorating the home is as important as eating food. A home becomes a house when the home maker adds that extra loving touch to its interiors. A house looks good only when it is decorated nicely and sprinkled with loads of love.

In today’s article, I would talk about colour and the and the emotional effect of a particular colour on the people living in the house.

Colour not only appeals to the intellect but also influences our emotions. Colours can be exciting or relaxing. They can create feeling of warmth or coolness. One of the most important qualities of colour to be considered in interior decoration is its warmth or coolness. Colour that contains much yellow and red are considered to be warm and those containing blue are regarded as cool. Green and purple are both. warm colours can be used for the room facing North because in these rooms less light is received. Whereas, cool colours can be used for the rooms facing South.

Heaviness and lightness of colours should also be kept in mind. Yellow and red are heavy whereas blue and purple are light. Therefore, light colours are used for walls, roofs, furniture and heavy for mats and rugs. Heavy colours are usually used for men’s room or liabrary and cool colours for women’s or children’s room.

Advancing and receding qualities of colour is also an important aspect in interior decoration. Warm hues seem to advance and cool ones seem to recede. Advancing colour make a room look smaller whereas cool, pale colours enlarge a room. If a room is rectangular, paint the long walls with dark colours and the smaller ones with cool colours and the room will look like a square.

Different colours have different characteristics. The characteristics of some of the colours are as follows:
Yellow - warm, sunny, bright, cheerful.
Orange - lively, joyous, cheering, warm.
Red - warm, stimulating, courageous, vigorous.
Green – cool, quiet, calm, restful, serene, peaceful.
Blue - coolest of all colours, tranquil, peaceful, soothing.
Purple – rich, royal, dignified.
White – pure, cool.
Black – dead, grave, warm.

Different colours have different emotional effect on us as well. There are various factors that effect our choice of colour for different rooms. All this and more will be discussed in the next article. Till then, paint your thoughts and colour your imagination.
