The executive director of the Office of Immigration, Elizabeth Mills, said that just showing that Nova Scotia is a wonderful place to live will not attract talented immigrants. She said at a gathering of Atlantic Canadian municipal leaders in Halifax that the only way to make immigrants stay is to provide them jobs.
With worsening of economy and number of jobless people rising, boosting immigration becomes more important than ever, she said, adding that it is a myth that Canadian jobs are taken away by immigrants. She said that in fact immigrants create jobs and increase productivity of the nation.
Ms. Mills said during a conference that immigrants can take a job only if there aren’t local people to grab it.
Ms. Mills claimed that there are large numbers of employment opportunities available for immigrants. But the bureaucracy of the government is not helping, claim several municipal leaders.
Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Mary Ellen Valkenier, who was present in the meeting, said that various concerns need to be addressed including security and medical concerns. Ms. Valkenier said that the department is listening to all and they are trying to develop policies to bring people from overseas to meet the economic challenges the country is dealing with.
