Statistics Canada disclosed that Canada’s population grew more in the past three months in comparison to any third quarter since the past 18 years. According to the agency, immigration was the main cause behind the growth. It has been reported that 71,300 people entered Canada during the period July 1- October 1, 2008, and most of these immigrants arrived as a result of efforts from individual provinces to attract people from all over the globe.
In the population growth of 129,900 since July, which takes the count to 33,441,300, every province and territory has its share.
Western Canada has reportedly recorded most of the growth, with the highest number being attracted by Alberta. A combined tally of new Canadians and people who moved to Alberta from other provinces numbered 25,640 in the third quarter of 2008, and according to Statistics Canada, this growth has been due to the continuing job opportunities that are being offered in the province.
Hubert Denis, senior analyst for Statistics Canada, said that generally people move to places where jobs are available, and that is what Alberta has which attracted people.
After it began participating in the Provincial Nominee Program, Prince Edward Island has registered a huge increase in the number of people arriving there, and this makes it easier for people from other countries to arrive in Canada. Prince Edward Island recorded highest number of immigrants in the third quarter with 611 people, previous highest being 420.
Similar programs all over Canada have enhanced immigration numbers in a significant manner.
