Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, has announced that international students can now apply online to extend their study permit.

Minister Kenney said that government wants that the preferred choice for international students should be Canada. He said that the introductions of new e-services are one of the directions in which the government is working towards in the process of attracting and retaining students from all over the world.

More than six thousand international students have applied online for an off campus work permit after the launch of a pilot project in June last year. International students studying at more than two hundred educational institutions will now be eligible to apply for an off-campus work permit and they will also confirm their eligibility online. Students can view the complete list of institutes participating in the project at the CIC website.

Minister Kenney said that the government is committed towards serving the international students in every possible way, and said that the new e-Services will smoothen the progress of application process, improve employment prospects for international students and will have positive impact of long-term integration.

Kenney said that it is extremely important to protect personal information and therefore, CIC has placed proper safeguards with the use of Government of Canada Secure Channel. The Secure Channel is a system which is in accordance with the federal privacy standards and makes sure that all online transactions are private and secure.

International students who are able to get skilled work experience after the completion of their graduation may qualify to apply under the Canadian Experience Class for permanent residency.
