No matter how good your lack of Canadian Experience always sets you back for a while
HI new comers, we are here in Canada to make our new life in a new society, this blog is here all about to make new relations, new friends in new world. Touching this topic, of course, I suffered for first few months of coming here and I am suffering in a way that I could have been bit better in my job, accept it that this is what we do to employees from state 2000 kms away.
Before coming to Canada, I was in Punjab, India and probably a man from Bihar was not half as comfortable in society as non-bihari at least for first six to nine months. So why crib, when we take time to settle here and when we are asked for Canadian experience.
Many new arrivals to Canada and Toronto in particular discover that they cannot get an IT job as soon as they arrive - no matter their level of skill or experience. The reasons given usually center around lack of language skills and of “Canadian experience".
Canadian experience usually means having experience interacting with people in the context of the culture found in Canada. Every culture is different. For instance, relationships between supervisors and sub-ordinates vary from culture to culture; and country to country. And Toronto is the most cultural diverse city in the world!
Now when Canadian Experience is so essential then how to get the same without getting a job; my suggestion would be Volunteer. Volunteering for a charitable or cultural organization will help you to get Canadian experience and references.
When you volunteer you are working. And you have someone that you will report to - a supervisor. You work with other people - usually in English.
At the end, let me tell you what I have learnt. Without Canadian experience, there is no hope or at least life is a struggle to say the least, but my belief is every where human nature is same, people have same problems, same egos, same compulsions and similar ambitions; may be accent or some culture habits differ. So having Canadian experience is not much of an issue, carry one…. New life beckons you…
