The government is at it again. From the coming academic session the government has decided to introduce a new quota system for admission to professional courses. If they have their way there will be a 27% reservation for OBC’s ( Other backward classes ) in 20 central universities, IITs and IIMs. Along with the constitutionally mandated 22 percent reservations already in force for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the additional quotas will raise the number of seats reserved for certain groups to as high as 49 percent.
Politicians can be so insensitive to the needs of the country. For vote banks they are ready to sacrifice the future of the country. Students holding ranks in lakhs get admission in so many prestigious institutes. These students hold no promise for the future. It is because of them that we have poor quality dams & bridges and doctors who play with the lives of patients.
Manhoman Singh is following the line of former PM V. P. Singh. Maybe he has forgotten the outrage and chaos that followed the decision to introduce quotas for OBC’s at that time. Reservations are not needed at all. Scholarships for needy students is good enough to serve the purpose. It remains to be seen what impact this ill-considered move will have on India's image as a country which is currently the virtual home of information technology and a business destination for the corporate world.
Thanks to a Supreme Court directive that reservations cannot be for more than 50% of the total seats, there is still hope for at least some deserving students.
