Melynda Jarratt, a Fredericton historian says that changes to the citizenship laws of Canada are not enough, and added that the alteration to the act last week are not up to the mark.
The modifications to the act which came to effect from Friday will mean that some people who acquired Canadian citizenship on or after the 1st of January, 1947, when the first citizenship act came to existence, but then lost their citizenship due to unawareness will get back their citizenship.
Though Jarratt is happy with the post-1947 citizenship, but wonders what will happen in case of pre-1947 people. Jarratt said on Monday that anyone who is born illegal in Canada before the 1st of January, 1947, for instance, someone who was not born to a Canadian war veteran and a British war bride, will just not get his or her citizenship, even if the concerned person has lived all his life in Canada and even if his or her parents got married after the birth of the baby.
Jarratt said that several thousand people are facing this situation.
Jarratt said that illegitimate children are bastards without any rights in Canada and in spite of living in Canada throughout their life, they are not being granted citizenship.
