Immigrants refusal to Assimilate would hurt new coming immigrants from their community
As an immigrant to Canada from India, I can proudly say two things; One that I am proud of my culture and second that I have been quite successful and keen in adapting to good things about the host country. Ever year, thousands of immigrants come to North America from different parts of the world.
Most immigrants feel proud in saying that they have refused to adapt to any custom of their new home country. In fact, most have been seen forcing their own customs on to locals. They continue to speak their own separate dialect, maintain a foreign lifestyle.
This behavior of theirs is seen as a strain on the economy by requiring new infrastructure and expanded public services. Natives feel that these immigrants are ripping apart their culture and way of life. The refusal of immigrants to adapt to new life threatens the individuality of the state.
No doubt, an average Canadian welcomes change; he expects immigrants to get woven into the fabric of their local culture, adapt and persevere. On the other hand immigrants tend to tether themselves to their "home cultures." Whereas past immigrants had to adapt to survive, current immigrants can choose whether or not to assimilate as with current spate of immigration, their number has swelled.
I may not be fair to all immigrants, if I fail to mention here that many immigrants have assimilated; some seamlessly, by embracing the traditions of the state, without sacrificing their individuality, they have modeled their lifestyles in a way that is compatible with the preexisting culture. It is the rejection of the few immigrants, who could be minority out of their own community numbers but yet vocal that makes others see them representative of the whole community. It is intolerable. For example, in Laibar Singh case, hardly 2500 sikhs participated in the ruckus, yet they made themselves look like as if they represent entire 1 million Sikhs in Canada.
Even worse, many don't even assimilate linguistically. They trip over words like tortilla, fajita and saguaro. These immigrants hang on to their non-standard English.
For the benefit of potential immigrants from their own community, it would be good if the current radical immigrants change their mindset and your lifestyle, adapt to nice points of the new culture.
But if you are unwilling to assimilate, pack up the SUV, hop on the highway and good luck- be back to your own country.
