On Wednesday, 24th of June, the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd termed an assault against any students from foreign country as “one assault too many” and said that the Australian government has taken the attacks on students of India very seriously.
While speaking to a media delegation from India, Rudd said that the government of Australia was sensitive to the welfare of every student from foreign nation and promised to do everything possible to increase security of international students. Rudd however pointed out that Australia is still the safest country in the whole world if the international comparative criminal data is analyzed, and termed Australia to safer than countries like US, US, Italy and France.
Rudd said that in comparative manner, it can be observed that students from India and other countries are safer in Australia than they are in most countries in the world. He also said that in comparison to other countries, homicide rates in his country were also lower.
Though Rudd said that his government will find a way through all this with the help of many friends in the Indian community, he also pointed out that even Australians have been attacked in the past, including twenty times in India only.
Rudd said that at any time, there are millions of Australians traveling across the world, and if few Australians are for some reason attacked in India, then they won’t blame people of India or the government for the attacks. He said that these things happen sometime or the other and are very regrettable, but added that as the prime minister of Australia he has the responsibility to make sure that international students are safe in his country.
