Everything seems so fickle today. Nothing is consistent. There’s no assurance that what you have now, will be with you the next moment. For instance: Happiness! Elusive, isn’t it? How often have you thought:
If only I had that car…I’d be satisfied!
If only I wasn’t under so much financial stress…I’d be content.
If only this…and if only that….
If you can relate yourself to it then I have some news for you today.
Even if all the ‘if only’s’ in the world come true, still would not guarantee your happiness. We all dream of material gains and experience a rush of joy at receiving something we have longed for but only to discover that the pleasure that they bring somehow vanishes too soon.
Happiness cannot be found in riches, relationships or recognition. It can only be found in your soul. Happiness does not depend on having or not having problems. Everyone has problems but not everybody is unhappy.
You feel happy when you are content and you feel content when you have it all. I’m not talking of material gains here. You must have come across people who seem to have very little but are still happy while there are others who aren’t happy even if though they own a whole kingdom. So, one thing is foreseeable that material gains might buy a happy moment but they won’t buy a happy lifetime.
Then what will? Nothing; I would say. Because happiness is not a tradable commodity it’s only an attitude. The attitude to be able discover to our weak links. Those who think that they have it all are the most unhappy, though they might put on a happy-faced mask.
Nobody is always happy because one can never have it all. Poverty is not just a matter of finances. We all lack something. It may be a financial poverty, emotional poverty, intellectual poverty, occupational poverty or some other form of it. The secret of happy living lies in discovering our poverty pocket; that weak area where we need help.
We must acknowledge our weakness, face up to our poverty and seek help. Remember becoming poor in spirit does not make us small.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.â€
