Ronald Bilbao turned 21 this year and this would be one birthday that he would remember forever, not because of the gift he received but because of what he gifted his parents.
A rising senior at UNC-Chapel Hill, Bilbao sponsored his parents to live legally in the United States. His parents were among the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States, with no means to correct their immigration status, and the story had been the same for them since 1984. But some weeks back, they discovered that they were a part of a small group of illegal immigrants who can acquire citizenship in the US.
In the complicated immigration laws of the US, there exists a provision which states that any person who entered the country on legal visa but remained even after the expiry of the visa, can apply for permanent residency if he or she has an immediate family member as citizen of the US and is over 21 years of age. This was their answer, as their son, Ronald, was satisfying all the criteria for gifting his parents a sure-shot lottery ticket.
On the 8th of January and in March, he signed all the forms and in the month of March, his parents got their green cards which enable them to live in the United States permanently.
Speaking on the great achievement for his family, Bilbao said that he did not do anything in a unique way and said that he was just a lucky, though he had to wait for 21 long years to do something substantial for his parents.
