According to a report, a large number of foreign students in Australia become victims of economic slavery and are forced to work in extremely dangerous situations in order to keep going.
According to the report, foreign students have to work without pay or sometimes even pay some amount to get themselves hired by companies which abuse the Australian immigration and education laws.
Not only this, even colleges in which students enroll, charge them thousands of dollars in the name of ‘placement fees’ just to publicize their supply of free worker.
Another condition is to acquire nine-hundred hrs’ work experience in the course in which they are enrolled.
An immigration agent Karl Konrad said that a fraudulent document trade has evolved under which employers and agents sell verification for students stating that they have completed their required 900 hrs work. An agent reveled that for any such paperwork, he normally charges somewhere in between USD 15,000 to USD 20,000.
The agent termed students as ‘slaves’, saying that they work without pay from 11 in the morning till 11 in the night and that too without any breaks. Unfortunately that is the only option they have if they wish to stay in the country.
They do not even get workers’ compensation or insurance. In case they get injured while working, it’s just their bad luck and no mercy would be shown, he added.
Karl said that the system started getting bad with the introduction of 900 hours’ work requirement.
