According to University of Queensland researcher, records of Australia and Canada in combating human trafficking were among the worst in the developed world.
Dr. Andreas, who is a senior lecturer in the University of Queensland’s TC Beirne School of Law, said that trafficking in persons remained a fact that is not well understood and poorly researched.
Dr Schloenhardt will conduct the first comprehensive and comparative analysis in Canada and Australia on the exploitation of foreign sex workers and trafficking in persons, especially women and children. He will also give a seminar on the topic.
Dr Schloenhardt said that the true extent of this problem is not fully known, mainly due to the concealed nature of the phenomenon and the taboo nature of the sex industry. He said that government agencies suggest that several hundred persons are trafficked into both countries every year, while the non-government organizations claim the numbers to be several thousands.
Dr Schloenhardt said that the risk of exploitation increases if the sex worker has been trafficked into Australia or Canada and lacks access to support services. He said that trafficking of persons commonly involves international criminal groups that benefits from the exploitation of their victims.
