A top official of the foreign office has said that Canada is actively pursuing comprehensive nuclear and business agreements with India in order to boost bilateral ties and business relations which remain “unshaken” by the recent Mumbai terror attacks.
Ken Sunquist, Assistant Deputy Minister (Asia and Africa) and Chief Trade Commissioner in the foreign office said addressing to a conference that Canada-India business ties are unshaken by the recent Mumbai attacks, and the top priority of the country is to finalize nuclear and business agreements with India.
India is also one of the major source countries for immigrants to Canada. So, this comes as good news for people planning to immigrate to Canada.
Sunquist said that both sides had informal discussions in the month of October and expect to schedule formal sessions soon, adding that Canada signaled its support for India’s reengagement with the nuclear-energy community when it backed NSG’s decision to end three decades of atomic apartheid.
Preeti Saran, Consul General of India, said that as the second fastest growing economy of the world, second to only China, there was great opportunity for Canadian companies to invest in infrastructure, biotechnology, energy including nuclear energy, science and technology, higher education, pharmaceuticals and agriculture.
She said that there was a need to increase cooperation in higher education, as India is looking forward to expand ties with many Canadian universities.
David M Malone, President of International Development Research Centre and former High Commissioner to India said that in order to boost freer flow of goods and people, the country took immigration reforms to attract more talents from India, as the country did not wanted to confine its relationship with India merely to trade and investment.
