Adopting the food culture of Canada
We are Punjabis and as the whole world know that Punjabis love eating especially cooked dishes. We eat a lot as compared to the people living in Canada. The Canadians eat only when they have to. We eat when we want to. This may seem a bit funny to those who are reading it, but when you face this fact in the new environment after immigration to Canada, you feel lost. People from Punjab move to Canada very often, as the literacy rates are high here and many of the people find really good jobs in Canada. They may move to Canada due to these reasons, but many of them are shocked when they realize that the eating habits of Pakistanis and Canadians are so different. In Pakistan, we actually take two full meals in a day, which is topped by a breakfast in the morning and cookies and other stuff to go along with tea or coffee twice a day. In Canada, you can find that people eat half of a sandwich in the whole working day!!! Just imagine two people sitting together in an office, one eating more than one serving of fried rice and other eating just half a sandwich. You feel understand the actual problem then.
Once people move to Canada, they adopt the eating habits there. The actual problem exists only till the time when the immigrants start understanding the way life is pent in Canada. Imagine the immigrants going to a restaurant in Canada. These people are used to a typical life style and like to eat a special type of spicy food. These people may not be able to find any thing on the menu which they have eaten before. The situation may be different for some of them who are better informed or are frequent travelers.
First of all it is to be understood by the immigrants that liking the food from the place you have spent most of your life in is no crime. You have every right to eat the stuff you like and as much as you like. To make it easier for you to settle down in Canada, what you can do is, you should visit the restaurants frequently if you can afford that and try to develop the taste for the food eaten in Canada. It will help you in settling down in Canada. Eating healthy is a good habit. You can follow the Canadians if their diet is according other health requirements. Nobody is forcing you to eat one thing or not to eat another thing, but you must try to understand and learn the culture prevailing in the country you are now trying to stay in.
