Timmins police have arrested a man after he failed to register as a sex offender in Texas.
On the 26th of November, after an arrest warrant was issued by the Canada Border Services Agency, Timmins Police Service arrested forty-year old Billy Ray Ross Jr.
Earlier this year, Ross was convicted of indecency with a child and in the month of July, he failed to register as a sex offender in Texas.
Sgt. Martin Wallingford told The Daily Press that they became that this individual might be in their area and hence, commenced an investigation. He said that they contacted the Canada Border Services Agency and as a result the arrest was issued.
Wallingford didn’t know why Ross came to the Timmins area, but said that he crossed over into Canada last year in the month of June.
Wallingford said that at this point of time, he can only say that there is no reason to be alarmed and there is no reason to suspect that he has been involved in any criminal activity here in Timmins.
Ross was later taken to Monteith Correctional Complex, where he is being detained pending a hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. It is a requirement under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act that his grounds of detention must be reviewed by the board with 48 hrs of his arrest.
Annamaria D’Angelo, of the CBSA’s communications branch said that they are working closely with other law enforcement agencies to secure the safety of all Canadian residents. She said that these things are dealt on a case by case basis and removal takes place only after all avenues are exhausted.
Prior to deportation, the prisoner also has the option of a judicial review and pre removal risk assessment.
