A Nagpur-based couple was recently detained by the immigration officers while the couple was trying to take an infant to Canada using a fake passport.
The Indian couple, Amarjeet Singh Lubhana, 51 and his 42-year old wife Kamaljeet, was on their way towards entering Canada and introducing their 16-month old baby girl to their relatives in Canada. However, the couple was stopped at the Mumbai Airport by the immigration officials because the passport of the child they were carrying was obtained fraudulently.
According to the passport, Lubhana and his wife are the parents of the child. However, according to what the Nagpur police informed the Mumbai immigration officials, Kamaljeet was not the biological mother of the child. The child actually belonged to a woman named Sunita Sahakar who is a resident of Nagpur. Sunita acted as a surrogate mother for the childless couple, police said. Deputy commissioner Nisar Tamboli said that the case seems to be a matter of surrogacy. He added that no matter what the case is like, the fact is that the passport needs to mention the detail accurately.
On Thursday, the couple was produced before the magistrate court. Following this, Kamaljeet has been remanded to jail custody and her husband is in police custody till August 18. Meanwhile, the infant has been given to her biological mother.
The cops said that the couple had been childless for a very long time. Therefore, Sunita, their neighbor gave them her child and acted as a surrogate mother.
