Recently the Government has announced many big-ticket reforms to be implemented in a month or so. One of the major among these is the free entry to A-grade global universities into India without any restriction. This will include foreign universities setting up courses or entire institutions in India. No doubt such a step will have a great impact on Indian education system especially the higher education.

An advertisement by the Government of India Health Ministry flashes on the Doordarshan. It presents the scene of a clinic where a couple goes for the abortion of the female foetus. Still there was time for the abortion procedure to proceed and husband is shown having a dream which have a deep impact on his heart and soul. Gulping down breakfast after a quick shower, you put on your denims, a cool top, freshened with some deodorant and leave for college, speeding along the road in the college bus. Then you enter your class after meeting some friends, 15 minutes after the lecture has begun. You select the last bench behind a huge and tall guy and patiently wait only to sign the attendance sheet.

Since its inception, the Democratic Republic of India has reserved a certain fraction of central jobs for SC/ST/OBCs. Today, the point of having these reservations seems moot for an urban dwelling citizen like myself. More so - when it comes to reservations in educational institutes. Given that I do not have the perspective to analyze the “real” social reasons for creating reservations 50 years ago, I will approach this burning topic with caution and my own reasoning.

Earlier in the year Bush has ruled out direct US-Iran talks on the nuclear issue being chary about the Iranian effort to undo multilateral diplomacy.
