When my first husband and I, both teachers in England without any children, learnt that our counterparts in B.C. were earning 21/2 times our salary, we decided to migrate to Canada.
After satisfying the Canadian immigration requirements, both of us applied for jobs, and got them with the Sechelt School district because they were the only school board who would deploy us without any interview.
Statistics Canada traced the development of landed immigrants and in particular their participation in the labour force. The study shows that a large majority of immigrants, somewhere around 80 percent, found a job in the initial two years in Canada and most of them stayed in that particular job for more than a year. Sustained employment is far more prominent among principal applicants as more than half of them stayed with their jobs for more than 18-months.

Despite various statements claiming that progress is being made in Afghanistan, thousands of people from Afghanistan are trying to flee to the safety of other countries, including Canada. At the time, when Bush was preparing to express his deep concerns over human rights record in China, a Chinese immigrant Hiu Lui Ng was dying in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The 33-year old Mr. Ng had been repeatedly complaining of an excruciating back pain for several months. But, his complains were not respected and officials accused him of faking back pain. Finally, when a judge ordered that Mr. Ng should be brought to the hospital, it was too late. It was found that he had a fractured spine, cancer all over his body and sadly, very little time to live. Five days later, he died leaving behind his wife and two young sons. Although Bush is scolding the Chinese government for its human rights abuses, the fact is that he himself is guilty of the same.
The deportation has been finalized and the Montivero family will be deported on Wednesday. In spite of letters from her obstetrician and also from the airlines, her deportation wasn’t postponed. Her obstetrician is disgusted of this and says that if he writes to the airline officials to let a pregnant woman go on a two hour vacation flight then they do so but at present, when he is clearly saying that due to pregnancy, it is really unsafe for Yesica to fly 14 hours, they say that if anything happens to her then they are not responsible for that and it is the immigration officials who are to be blamed.

The United States is extremely fortunate because of the fact that it attracts an apparently endless inflow of the best and the brightest people from all across the world as foreign guest workers. Most of these immigrants are highly skilled and talented individuals and have a high-skilled job set aside for their arrival. Most of them enter the US on the H-1B visas. These temporary immigrant workers include IT professionals, physical and social scientists, engineers and various other high level workers. These immigrants are the type of human capital that most societies of the world wish to have. But only few are fortunate, like the US.
