Convicted US Sex Offender traced in Canada

December 22, 2007: Gjunejet Asan, 28, a man convicted of sex offence in US has been arrested on charges of failure to disclose a criminal record. He was staying in Toronto.

If convicted, he faces possible deportation to his native Macedonia. In US state of New Jersey, he was convicted of attempted endangerment of a child after he chatted online with an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year-old girl. He was deported from the United States to Macedonia in 2006. Canada Border services have no record of his entry.

On Thursday, a source inadvertently notified Border Services of the situation. Within two hours, Toronto’s Immigration Task Force had located and arrested Asan.

He will be held in custody in Toronto until his immigration hearing.

The Immigration Task Force includes members of Border Services and the RCMP, OPP and Toronto police.
